update on my life

Hi all!
here's an update on my life:
cold spring harbor is absolutely incredible. my lab is awesome (our post doc brings his dog into the lab everyday) and has a good sense of humor, and everyone is working on really neat projects. my project, if it works, will allow us to image the brain of a fly while it's learning, in addition to when it's recalling things later. my flies are mutated so that when you shine a blue light on them, they taste sweetness. it's a really useful trick, and also ridiculously cool. we have quite a cast of characters in my program- i can't explain them in text, so i'll just say they keep things interesting. on thursday night we all had dinner with Dr. Watson and his wife Liz. at this point he's a batty old man who says offensive things just to get a rise out of people. with 28 undergrads as his captive audience, he was on a roll. notably, he does not approve of Biddy Martin as our president because we should have hired a hard scientist, and he wasn't all that impressed that we hired a woman. good times. his house is gorgeous and houses his fairly ridiculous art collection in addition to his library which is filled equally with books and awards and medallions. yesterday we went into the city for some art museum time...we saw everything that I had studied with staller this past semester and it was gorgeous! then we assisted an 87 yr old woman who passed out in front of us on our way out of the MOMA. after she was tucked into the ambulance, we ambled on our way and witnessed a minor fender-bender. then we bumped into my aunt on the corner as we were headed into central park, so we had dinner with her and my uncle after a visit to the met, where we made friends with a server at the cafe who had just burnt his butt cheeks by leaning against an oven. the trip home was relatively uneventful and we finished the night with wine and family guy. my parents are visiting me today which i'm really looking forward to! I'm forgetting a lot of little stories, but i don't want to make you read them all at once, so i'll post again in a bit.
love you all, your summers sound amazing!
